Power is a force that drives present day society and the works of historical literature. Power can be a very beneficial quality to possess; however if not used wisely it can consume and eventually destroy the one who possess it. In Macbeth the theme of power is clearly present .
When aiming to draw a parallel between the character of Macbeth and an individual of more modern times, ex President of the United States of America, Richard Nixon could be one such person.
For both men, power did not come easy. Macbeth was born a peasant while Nixon was born of a low income middle class family. Neither was at the first in any position to inherit power. They both had to shape their ambition to effectively achieve their goal.
Both Richard Nixon and Macbeth achieved power early on, yet both also yearned for more. Their insecurities and distrust for those around them were more than likely brought on by the lies and deep secret they were hiding. Macbeth was hiding the secret of the murder of Duncan which he committed in order to become king. Nixon wanted to hide his secret of the Watergate scandal which involved many illegal activities that were authorised by Nixon's staff.
These men also believed that with their extreme power they could not be overtaken. However this is far from the truth.Nixon's scandal went under FBI investigation and much evidence was uncovered. This ended his reign of power and his countless deceptive acts. Macbeth's days of reign ended in his death.
Both Nixon and Macbeth's effort to change their fate caused their rises to high power come to tragic ends.
It is clear that these men have experienced both rise and fall in power. Both men were ultimately consumed by their own ambitious morals which in turn destroyed their life goals and made them weaker than they were in the beginning of their journey. Power and shame are two clear themes that parallel and links both stories together.
